Press Release

Myrtis at Volos

The exhibition “Myrtis: Face to Face with the Past” that was inaugurated on Friday, 14th October 2011 αt the «Roof Tile and Brickworks Museum N. & S. Tsalapata”, inaugurates the collaboration of the 13th EPKA and the “Athanassakion” Αrchaeological Μuseum of Volos with the above museum, and for almost two and a half months they will host parallel exhibitions on the subject of the Athenian Myrtis, relevant and complementary to each other.

“Athanassakion” Archaeological Museum in collaboration with Associate Professor of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Manolis Papagrigorakis, creator of the exhibition “Myrtis: Face to Face with the Past”, will host a photography exhibition of Myrtis, that is concerned with the chronicle of the excavation and the study and remolding of the face of an eleven year-old girl -Myrtis- from her skull, that was found in the ancient cemetery of Keramikos in Attica. The photography exhibition was first presented successfully in the Athens’ international airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”.

Together with the above exhibition there will be the art exhibition “Myrtis”, the starting point of which has been the archeological find and the reconstructed face of Myrtis, which inspired artists to create new pieces of art or offer older works of theirs for the exhibition of the young Athenian.

Myrtis is received at the “Athanassakion” Archaeological Museum of Volos by another anonymous girl, contemporary with her (second half of the 5th century BC), from the ancient city of Feres (today’s Velestino), who, with the image of her tomb and two ancient funerary steles of the same age, participates in the exhibition of the -already famous- Athenian Myrtis.

The exhibition at the “Athanassakion” Archaeological Museum of Volos will be inaugurated on Saturday, 22nd October 2011, at 18.00 p.m., with addresses in the reception hall of the museum and a showing round to the exhibitions. Before that, there will be a guided tour to the permanent exhibits of the Museum that will start at 17.00 p.m.

Entrance to the inauguration day festivities will be free for the public. The exhibition will be open until Saturday, 31st December 2011, during the museum working hours.
