The only source for this tale is the “Metamorphoses” of Apuleius, the Latin prose-writer of the 2nd century A.D.

It is certain that Apuleius drew from Greek sources for the creation of his singular romance, into which the fairy-tale is included, related as a consolation by an old lady to a young girl...

This archetypal fairy-tale is initiated in the Greek era. In Apuleius’ tale there emerge a multitude of Greek ideas and relevances, in a space which, though unspecified, put us in mind of the Aegean –the islands where Psyche is celebrated...
