Episode #4:
Conservation of Myrtis' skull and DNA analysis

 

George Panagiaris, Professor of Conservation of Antiquities & Works of Art, Technological Institute of Athens, talks about the process of conservation of the ancient skull of Myrtis, describing the methodology of interventions that was followed, in order to restore the finding and make possible its study by other researchers.

 

Dr. Chris Giapitzakis, Medical Geneticist, Biologist and Dentist, talks about the subjects of Molecular Biology and Genetics. He describes the difficulties encountered when analyzing DNA from ancient teeth, from the victims of the Plague of Athens and the process that led to the identification of a possible causal factor of the terrible disease …

 

Episode #3:
The plague of Athens and the reconstruction of Myrtis' head

 

We met Manolis Papagrigorakis, Assistant Professor of Orthodontics, in the University of Athens, instigator and coordinator of the whole Myrtis’ project. We discussed about the research for the identification of the cause of the Plague of Athens, about the importance of Myrtis’ skull and the idea that led to the reconstruction of her face.

 

Furthermore, Dr. Manolis Maravelakis describes the fabrication process of the exact replica of Myrtis’ skull that was held in Design and Manufacturing Lab, Technological Institute of Crete, in Chania.

 

 

 

Episode #2:
What did the kerameikos excavation reveal?

 

We asked the archaeologist Efi Baziotopoulou-Valavani to talk about the excavation in Kerameikos, the archaeological findings, their significance and, of course, Myrtis, the 11year-old girl who was buried in a common gravel in the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos.

 

 

 

Episode #1:
Trailer of the exhibition "Myrtis: Face to Face with the Past"

 

The exhibition «Myrtis: Face to Face with the Past» presents the interdisciplinary collaboration for the reconstruction of ancient faces, in this case the reconstruction of the face of an 11 year-old girl, Myrtis, whose skull was found in a mass burial excavated in the Kerameikos cemetery in 1994-1995, and dates to the 5th century B.C.

Είδα την έκθεση της Μύρτιδας στο Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό μουσείο στις αρχές Δεκεμβρίου κι εντυπωσιάστηκα.
Έχει γίνει καταπληκτική δουλειά.
Είναι η πρώτη φορά που μια έκθεση τέτοιου είδους της έχει γίνει από Έλληνες επιστήμονες.
Πολλά συγχαρητήρια στον γιατρό Παπαγρηγοράκη.
Συνεχίστε με το ίδιο πάθος και μεταφέρετε το μήνυμα της Μύρτιδας σε όλο τον κόσμο με την έκθεση σας.
