"Father" of Myrtis talks about her work promoting the MDGs

myrtis_oheHis name is Manolis Papagrigorakis. He is a Greek dentist and Professor of Orthodontics at the University of Athens.
However, in Greece he is best known as the “father” of Myrtis.
Who is Myrtis? She is an 11 year-old Ancient Greek who lived in Athens during the era of Pericles, 2500 years ago.
No, Professor Papagrigorakis is not that old. He is called Myrtis' "father" since he and his team managed to perfectly reconstruct the face of Myrtis, who died in the Plague of Athens in 430 B.C. Since 2010, the young Athenian has been responsible for a traveling exhibition entitled “Myrtis: Face to Face with the Past”.
Professor Papagrigorakis wished Myrtis to be a scientific success, but also to play a role in the worldwide effort to eliminate preventable diseases, such as typhoid fever that probably killed her, and is still killing thousands of people around the world.
That is why in 2010, Professor Papagrigorakis accepted UNRIC’s proposal to name Myrtis as Friend of the UN Millennium Development Goals along with well-known personalities such as Kofi Annan and Bianca Jagger.
Myrtis “assumed” her duties without delay by sending a message to world leaders who attended the UN Millennium Development Goals Summit of September 2010, which focused on the reduction of child mortality.
This excellent cooperation between an exciting scientific project and the United Nations was praised a few days ago by Professor Papagrigorakis onthe very popular Greek talk show “Sta Akra” (At the Edge).
Mr. Papagrigorakis spoke about Myrtis and her “cooperation” with the United Nations and commended UNRIC and the United Nations in general for naming Myrtis a “Friend of the MDGs” and for giving her the opportunity to spread her message and that of the United Nations around the world.
Thank you Myrtis, thank you Professor Papagrigorakis. See you soon in a city somewhere in the world.
